Sampdoria’s form worsened a lot with the latest 3-1 loss

Sampdoria’s form worsened a lot with the latest 3-1 loss against Sassuolo ensuring a fourth consecutive defeat for the Italian club.

Manager Vincenzo Montella has failed to bring an improvement in form after taking over as the manager in November. However, he has been able to escape some of the criticism due to the awareness that the squad needs an overhaul. This revamp is expected to arrive in January, as the club are likely to bankroll significant additions to improve the squad according to the needs of the new manager. Alberto Aquilani could be one of the names coming to the club in January if reports are to be believed.

The former Liverpool and Roma midfielder is no longer in Italian football after having left Fiorentina at the end of last season. He is currently with Portuguese outfit Sporting CP having joined them on a free transfer this summer. Even though Aquilani has been an important member of the Portuguese outfit, he is thought to be seriously considering the prospect of returning to the Italian league once again. The interest from Sampdoria, who are managed by former Fiorentina boss Montella, is likely to have a major say. Montella knows Aquilani well from his time at Fiorentina and the lack of creative options at Sampdoria has been woefully exposed in recent matches.

The team has got a paltry return of three goals in the last five games and they will continue to slip down the table fast if this run persists. The January transfer window cannot come any sooner, but Sporting are unlikely to let Aquilani leave on a cheap having only signed him a few months ago. The overwhelming desire from the player to return to Italy may turn the tables in favour of Sampdoria. Lazio are the next opponents for Vincenzo Montella’s team.
