AS Roma boss insists Nicolo Zaniolo is not for sale this summer

AS Roma manager Paulo Fonseca has insisted that the club won’t entertain any offers for Nicolo Zaniolo during this summer’s transfer window. Zaniolo is regarded as one of the club’s most promising young players and he has registered eight goal and two assists from 30 appearances this term.

His progress has caught the eye of many European clubs and Tottenham Hotspur are said to have recently made an approach without any success. The Giallorossi are quite clear that they won’t sanction the Italian’s sale at any price this summer and Fonseca said the same during a recent press conference, he told: “We don’t want to sell Nicolò Zaniolo this summer. He’s part of our project.”

Zaniolo’s season appeared to have ended at the beginning of the year after he picked up a serious knee injury, but he has been able to recover from the setback after the unexpected three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic. He has not had much of an influence on the team’s performances since the restart and Fonseca has preferred to ease him back into action.
Roma are currently fifth on the table with 64 points, four ahead of AC Milan. With two games to play, they are in a strong position to secure a Europa League group stage spot for next season. Meanwhile, the club could still qualify for the Champions League, suppose they are able to go all the way to win the Europa League crown.
However, that is far easier said than done. They are scheduled to face Sevilla in a single-elimination match at the round of 16 stage next month. The game won’t be easy, considering the Spanish club are regarded as Europa League specialists and have won the competition for a record five occasions including a hat-trick of titles between 2014 to 2016.
