Fiorentina sealed their first victory of the season in the Serie A after defeating Atalanta with a narrow score of 1-0. This triumph came at a cost for Fiorentina as Mario Gomez picked up an injury that will be leaving him out of action for around 3 weeks according to the medical staff of the Italian club.

A statement from the official website of Fiorentina stated: "ACF Fiorentina can confirm that in the closing stages of the Atalanta v Fiorentina match, Mario Gomez sustained a grade one injury to the myotendinous junction of the flexor tendons in his right thigh. Gomez has already started treatment on the injury, and will undergo more tests in 10 days. He is expected to return to full fitness within three weeks."

This is not the news that a player who still has not scored a league goal for his club wants to hear.

Fiorentina will now have to cope without having 2 of their biggest stars as Giuseppe Rossi is also out injured. Giuseppe Rossi decided to undergo a surgery in his knee and now is estimated to be out of the playing fields for up to 5 months.

Mario Gomez is no stranger to injuries or surgeries as the German forward has suffered from a few incidents similar to this one in the past and there it was due to some of his more recent injuries that left him out of the 2014 World Cup as the coach of Germany, Joachim Low decided to not include Gomez in his squad.

The last international tournament that Mario Gomez appeared for Germany was in the 2012 Euro’s where he managed to score a number of important goals and become the second best goal-scorer of the entire tournament with Fernando Torres taking the top spot.

The former player of Bayern Munich has expressed his desire to play for Germany once more.

‘’I obviously want and I will come back to the national team. The pre-season preparation went well and we are well prepared for the start of the Italian season’’ Gomez said.
