Alberto Aquilani has said that he wants to represent his country Italy in the next FIFA World Cup which will be played this year in Brazil.
The 29 years Old playmaker who is currently playing for Fiorentina in the Italian top flight has never featured in a World Cup. He was in contention to find a place in the Italian squad for the last World Cup, but, he got ignored eventually. That might happen again as his recent form hasn’t been top class.
However, it’s not that Aquilani hasn’t got time to get himself into contention. He has got plenty of that. The World Cup will begin in June which is still about 5 months away and during this period, he will play a lot of games at the club level. With some good performances in those games, he can catch the eyes of Cesare Prandelli who is currently in charge of the Italian national team.
Aquilani reckons that this is his last opportunity to play in the biggest international football tournament and rightly so. He will be 33 years old when the next World Cup comes and nobody knows if he will remain active as a player by that time or not.
Talking to the reporters yesterday, Aquilani said, “Each and every player is looking to be selected in his national squad for the World Cup and I am no different. I may not get another opportunity. So, I desperately want to make it to the squad this time around.”
Aquilani had played his first match for the senior team of Italy way back in 2006. He has been in and out of the team since then and has got just 33 international caps till now. The no. of goals that he has scored at the international level is 5.
